A stair lift is a motorized chair that moves up and down a staircase. The seat is connected to a rail mounted onto the stair treads. If you have mobility issues, a recent injury or if stairs have become a safety issue, a stair lift can help you get from one floor to another in your home.
There are three common types of stair lifts, and you choose the model that conforms to the type of staircase you have. These are straight, curved and outdoor.
Boston stair lift costs vary, mainly based on the type. For straight stair lifts, prices range from $2,500 to $5,000 with installation, at the time of publishing. Curved stair lifts are more customized, and prices can range from $8,500 to $14,000, depending on how complex the installation is. In addition to stair lift type, other factors affecting the cost include:
Some companies offer pre-owned stair lifts, which can range from $2,200 to $3,000 (installed) for straight rails. Another short-term, economical option to consider is a stair-lift rental.
Does Medicare cover the cost of a stair lift? Medicare plans typically don’t cover stair lifts, as they are not considered Durable Medical Equipment (DME). Stair lifts are considered home modifications because of the staircase attachments. However, supplemental plans, such as Medicare Advantage, and certain Medicaid plans may cover stair lifts.
Do veteran’s benefits cover the cost of a stair lift? VA health might pay for a veteran’s stair lift if they were injured in service. For other veterans and/or spouses who have mobility issues unrelated to military duty, a VA Aid and Attendance benefit may apply.
Can I rent a stair lift? There are companies that offer stair-lift rentals. Rented lifts are high-quality and can be a great option for short-term needs, such as following surgery or to accommodate a temporary houseguest who has limited mobility.
Is there a market for reselling a stair lift? Some companies offer a buyback option, so that’s something to ask about when you’re getting quotes. They may charge a removal fee, but reselling can be useful in getting the lift out of your home while recouping some of the cost. And of course, you can always choose to resell your stair lift privately after you no longer need it.
